Self Service Installation

Full PowerShaper participation is limited to people based in Greater Manchester or York. These areas are within the catchment area for our installation and support staff.

If you do not live in these areas, you may still be able to get involved.

There are three scenarios we are considering. If you are interested in getting involved, and one of the scenarios below is suitable for you, please email us on powershaper@carbon.coop for more details.

Self-installation of a Carbon Co-op HEMS

In this situation, Carbon Co-op send you out a HEMS device with our software pre-installed.

You connect the HEMS to your router and connect to the PowerShaper service. You create your own automations on Home Assistant to control any smart devices in your home.

You would have an account on the Hub portal and the service would act in the same way as for full PowerShaper participants.

Some technical support will be available by email, but Carbon Co-op could not be held responsible for any automations or changes you make.

This scenario may be suitable for people who:

  • Have a smart meter that is working with our smart meter service

  • Have some experience with home automations in general, and Home Assistant in particular

  • Have a smart device (EV charger, immersion switch or heater) that they are interested in adding to the service

Notification Only Service

In this situation, you would not have a HEMS device installed in your home.

You would have an account on the Hub portal, and you would receive notifications of demand response events. To participate in an event, you would manually reduce your electricity load by turning off high load devices such as heaters, immersions or EV chargers.

This scenario may be suitable for people who:

  • Have a smart meter that is working with our smart meter service

  • Have a high load device (EV charger, immersion switch or heater) that they can vary the time of use

Own OpenADR Device

In this scenario, you would not have a Carbon Co-op HEMS device installed in your home.

As the PowerShaper service is built on the OpenADR standard, any OpenADR compatible device should work with the service.

If you have such a device, you should be able to add it to our service but will need configure it and download certificates.

Some technical support will be available by email.

This scenario may be suitable for people who:

  • Have a smart meter that is working with our smart meter service

  • Already own an OpenADR compatible device
